# Add harmonies to your own voice

A vocal harmony generator creates extra vocal parts from a single recording. IchiPitchy adds a third, a fifth and an octave built from the notes you actually sang, kept inside the key and scale of the take, each with its own level fader. The harmonies are your voice, not a synthetic one, and it is free.

## How the harmonies are built

The take is analysed into notes first, so a harmony voice is placed at the correct scale degree rather than shifted by a fixed number of semitones. A blanket +4 semitones turns a minor third into a major third half the time; choosing the diatonic third instead keeps every note inside the key.

Each voice is generated at absolute pitch from the note it should be singing, not by copying the lead's pitch and moving it. That matters when the lead take is slightly sharp or flat — a transposed copy would inherit the error and multiply it, whereas an absolute-pitch voice lands where the note belongs.

Vibrato and portamento from the original performance carry into the harmony voices, so they breathe with the lead instead of sounding like a static pitch-shift.

## Harmony on your own voice versus a synthetic backing singer

Most harmony tools give you a library voice singing your part. That is useful for a demo, but it is somebody else's timbre stacked behind yours, and it rarely blends.

Generating from your own recording keeps the timbre, the accent and the phrasing identical, because every voice comes from the same performance. It is the same reason real backing vocals are usually the lead singer double-tracked.

## Step by step

1. **Import your vocal.** Upload a dry vocal take, or record one straight into the browser.
2. **Confirm the key.** The key and scale are detected from the take; confirm or change them so the harmony stays diatonic.
3. **Turn harmony on.** One toggle generates the third, fifth and octave voices.
4. **Balance the voices.** Set each voice's level — a fifth alone is often enough; all three at full is rarely what you want.
