# Online multitrack mixer: mix vocals and stems in the browser

To mix multiple tracks online, open IchiPitchy's mixer and add each vocal, stem or instrument to its own track. Every track has volume, pan, mute, solo and an effects rack, the master bus has a limiter, and the mix is rendered on your own device — the audio is never uploaded — as a lossless 24-bit or 32-bit float WAV. Two mixer exports a month are free.

## What each track gives you

- Volume, pan, mute and solo per track, with metering.
- An effects rack matched to the instrument: vocals get gate, EQ, compressor, reverb and delay; drums get saturation and stereo width; bass gets a cleanup filter and drive; guitars get drive and chorus; keys get filter and tremolo.
- Clip editing on the timeline — arrange, split, copy, paste and duplicate clips or whole tracks.
- Clip looping that repeats on the bar rather than stretching, plus a cycle region that loops playback without affecting the export.

## Where the tracks come from

Four sources feed the mixer: a file from your computer, a saved project, a vocal sent over from the editor, and a take recorded straight into the browser. Each can either start a new track or be appended onto an existing one.

The backing band generator adds more: 50 instruments across seven groups, built from a chord progression with rule-based music theory rather than AI, so the same settings always produce the same take. Each generated instrument lands on its own mixer track.

## Mixing a vocal against a backing

The common case is one vocal over one instrumental. Put the instrumental on one track and the vocal on another, then use the vocal's gate to clean the noise floor, EQ to carve space, and compression to hold the level steady. The master limiter catches peaks on the way out.

Because the editor and mixer share a project, a vocal can be tuned note by note first and then mixed, without exporting and re-importing between steps.

## A practical order for mixing a vocal over a backing

Balance before anything else. Set the vocal and backing faders so the words sit clearly on top with nothing else touched — most mixes are decided here, and reaching for EQ first usually means compensating for a level problem.

Then clean, then shape, then glue. Gate or trim the noise floor, cut whatever muddies the low mids, compress to hold the level steady across phrases, and only then add reverb or delay for depth. Adding effects before the balance is right is what makes a mix sound busy without sounding finished.

## Step by step

1. **Add your tracks.** Import audio files, pull a vocal or instrumental from a project, record straight in, or generate instruments.
2. **Arrange the clips.** Drag clips along the timeline or between tracks, split at the playhead, and loop a clip by dragging its right edge.
3. **Balance and process.** Set volume, pan, mute and solo per track, then open its effects rack — EQ, compressor, reverb, delay and more.
4. **Set the master.** Use the master fader and the −1 dBFS limiter, watching the peak meter and clip indicator.
5. **Export the mix.** Render to WAV at 24-bit or 32-bit float, or MP3 at 320 kbps. It renders at the source sample rate with no resampling.

## Browser mixing compared with the alternatives

| Capability | IchiPitchy | Typical browser DAW | Desktop DAW |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Install required | No — browser tab | No | Yes |
| Cost to use | Mixing unmetered; 2 free exports/month, then $3/mo | Free tier with limits | Paid licence |
| Multitrack timeline | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Per-track EQ / compressor / reverb / delay | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Note-level vocal pitch editing | Yes, built in | Rarely | Needs a plugin |
| AI vocal separation | Yes, built in | Sometimes | Separate tool |
| Backing band from a chord progression | Yes, 50 instruments | Loops or samples | Sample libraries |
| MIDI recording and plugin hosting | No | Sometimes | Yes |
| Export | Lossless 24-bit or 32-bit float WAV | Often MP3 on free tiers | Lossless |

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I mix multiple tracks online for free?

The mixer itself is free and unmetered — unlimited tracks, clips, per-track effects and the master limiter. Exporting the mix is metered: two free downloads a month, resetting monthly, and unlimited on IchiPitchy Pro at $3.

### How many tracks can I mix?

There is no fixed track limit. In practice a browser tab and your machine's CPU set the ceiling, and a typical vocal-plus-band arrangement of a dozen or so tracks plays back comfortably.

### Is this a DAW?

It is a focused vocal studio with a multitrack mixer rather than a general-purpose DAW. There is no MIDI recording and no plugin hosting — but vocal tuning, AI stem separation and a backing band generator are built in, which a DAW normally needs extra tools for.

### What quality does the mix export at?

Lossless WAV, either 24-bit PCM or 32-bit float. The mixer renders the export in the browser; stems can also be exported together as a .zip.

### Can I record a vocal straight into the mixer?

Yes. A recorded take lands as a clip on its own track next to the backing, with a count-in and a per-microphone latency offset to keep it aligned.

### What order should I mix in?

Balance first with faders alone, then clean up with gate and EQ, then compress to steady the level, then add reverb or delay last. Reaching for EQ before the balance is right usually means compensating for a level problem.

### Why does my vocal disappear behind the backing?

Usually a level and frequency clash rather than the vocal being too quiet. Try cutting the backing where it overlaps the voice instead of pushing the vocal louder — raising the vocal alone tends to make the mix loud rather than clear.

### Can I export individual stems instead of the full mix?

Yes. Vocal and instrumental stems can be exported together as a .zip, alongside the lossless mix.

### Is my audio uploaded when I mix?

No. Files you add to the mixer are decoded and mixed by your own browser, and the finished mix is rendered on your device before it downloads — the audio never goes to a server. The one exception is material you pulled in from an existing IchiPitchy project, which was already uploaded when you created it.
